All about… My Money Cottage
Redundancy is an event that can shake many of us financially, but for Clare McDougall from My Money Cottage, it was the start of a journey into making money online… and eventually, into blogging!
We found out how she made the most of a tricky situation and became a money blogger.
Tell us about your blog.
Why do you write about money?
After both myself and my husband were made redundant when I was pregnant, I realised we needed to make money fast. I started looking into ways to make extra money online and it all stemmed from there.
How did you start blogging?
I initially started blogging for myself around 8 years ago. I’ve recently become more confident about my writing and the tips I have to share so I made my blog public!
What’s your most popular post and why?
This one is currently the most popular post: it’s all about bargain high-street clothes for only £5.
I guess people are always on the look out for a bargain!
What’s your favourite post you’ve written, and why?
That’s a tough one. At the moment I think it’s the Reverse Advent Calendar post – I’m taking part with the UK Money Bloggers and it’s such an amazing cause.
What’s your number one money tip?
Planning is key to financial stability.
Plan your meals & write your shopping list from that. That’s the biggest way I’ve managed to cut back our weekly spend. If I don’t plan meals then we end up massively overspending on junk.
Also, plan for the unexpected & set up an emergency fund. That way you’re not turning to credit cards and loans to cover sudden, unexpected costs.
What’s your top blogging tip?
Don’t expect miracles; it takes a lot of time and effort to get yourself out there and to keep people coming back to your blog. Be consistent, be honest and try out everything you recommend before writing about it.
